Explore Wedowee

So much to offer!

Located in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, Wedowee was named after a Muscogee Creek Indian Chief who's name means "old water" in the Creek language. The town is situated in the central part of Randolph County, with U.S. Highway 431 running north-south through it and serving as the Main Street. The downtown area provides a variety of sights and experiences, from Art and Crafts shows in the median to Christmas trees and Santa during the holiday season.  On any one day, you can see logging and chicken trucks slow down and let folks walk across the street as they visit our quaint shops or grab a bite to eat at one of the downtown restaurants.

The county courthouse anchors the square, along with a historic statue listing names of all the area residents that lost their lives defending our country during World War I. The statue also presides over the most challenging traffic stop in town where Alabama State Highway 48 and U.S. Highway 431 meet.  To the east, Alabama State Highway 48 leads to Woodland, the home of country singer Vern Gosdin, and to the west, it leads to Lake Wedowee (also known as Harris Lake), the area’s biggest attraction with 367 miles of shoreline, 7 square miles of natural beauty with 11,000 acres of water to explore.

With approximately 3.5 miles of highway passing through town and no stoplights, travelers might pass right through town and miss one of the most charming places in the South. But those who know Wedowee can all agree that it is loaded with history, quirky charm, and friendly folks. Take a look at what we have to offer here in Wedowee and East Alabama!
